RAINMEN STAMPEDE BUFFALO, 111-90 BACK HOME
feb7-2010-300While Buffalo roamed the Metro Centre Sunday afternoon, it was the Halifax Rainmen who did the stampeding to a convincing 111-90 victory.

The win over the visiting Buffalo Stampede improved the Rainmen’s record to 7-2 on the season, securing the team’s hold on second place in the Premier Basketball League.

The Stampede charged out to a 28-25 first quarter lead Sunday but they were beaten soundly by the Rainmen over the final three quarters.

The turning point came early in the second quarter as the Stampede opened with six straight points, to run their lead to nine, 34-25.

The Rainmen, however, responded immediately, with Jevohn Shepherd coming off the bench to strike for a pivotal three-pointer. The Rainmen then added two more baskets and two foul shots to knot the score 34-34.

The quick strike gave the home team some much needed life as the gradually began to pull away from the Stampede, who seemed to run out of gas.

For the Rainmen, it was a team effort on the scoreboard. Adris DeLeon led the way with 17 points. Tony Bennett, 16 points, and Eric Crookshanks, 15 points, were right behind him. Desmond Ferguson chipped in with 13.

The Rainmen sit a game-and-a-half behind the first place Puerto Rico Capitanes (8-0), and two wins ahead of the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry and the Rochester Razorsharks, both 5-2.

The Cavalry and the Razorsharks do battle Thursday night in Rochester, while the Rainmen’s next game is Sunday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. at the Metro Centre against the Manchester Millrats.
